What the counts show
- Sociological Thinkers dominates Paper I: 72 questions since 2013 and 24 in the last five years, more than any other unit in either paper.
- Research methods are rising: Research Methods and Analysis has 17 questions from 2022 to 2026, joint second in Paper I with Politics and Society.
- Paper II is more evenly spread: Caste System, Industrialization and Urbanisation, and Challenges of Social Transformation (38 each since 2013) lead, but no single unit dominates the way Thinkers does in Paper I.
- Impact of colonial rule is a newer unit: all 19 of its questions have come since 2014, and 8 of them in the last five years.
Sociology Optional Exam Pattern
Both papers follow the same pattern: 250 marks, 3 hours, and 8 questions in two sections. Q1 and Q5 are compulsory and each has five short parts of 10 marks (about 150 words). Of the remaining six questions you attempt any three, with at least one from each section; these usually carry 20 + 20 + 10 marks. With 250 marks in 180 minutes, a 10-mark answer gets roughly 7 minutes.
How to Use Sociology Optional PYQs
- Start with the most-asked units. Use the tables above to prioritise, then open each unit page and read its questions newest first.
- Map every question to the syllabus. Keep the Sociology Optional syllabus open and tick off which lines each question tests; gaps show you what is still unasked.
- Attempt before you read an answer. Write the answer under a time limit first. Checking a model answer before attempting teaches recognition, not recall.
- Sit full papers year-wise. Once you have covered the units, attempt the 2025 and 2026 papers as full three-hour mocks using the PDFs above.
- Close the gaps with notes and model answers. Revise weak units from the Sociology Optional notes, and compare your answers with Sociology Optional PYQ Solutions.
