Distribution of pastoral and farming cultures outside the Indus, Development of community life. Settlements, Development of agriculture, Crafts, Pottery, and Iron industry.
Megalithic Cultures is the smallest unit on this list — four questions between 2012 and 2024, appearing in two of the last ten papers. With a sample this small there is no reliable rotation to read. What there is, is a very consistent framing: every one of the four questions has been about whether the megaliths can be treated as a single culture at all.
Every question the Commission has asked on this topic is listed below, newest first, with a written model answer linked against each one.

What UPSC keeps asking about Megalithic Cultures
Four questions is too few to call a pattern honestly, so rather than invent threads, here is what all four have in common and what each added.
The common demand: variation, not uniformity
- 2021 asked outright whether it is proper to treat the megaliths as a single, homogeneous or contemporaneous culture — and the expected answer is no.
- 2024 asked for the different types of burial practice and what the archaeology establishes.
- Any answer that describes “the megalithic culture” as one thing is starting from the wrong place. Lead with typological and regional diversity.
What each question added
- 2012: extent, settlement pattern and subsistence economy — the descriptive base you need for all the others.
- 2014: whether megalithic culture is the foundational phase of peninsular Indian history, which is an argument about continuity into the early historic south.
- 2021: the homogeneity question, plus what kind of evidence would settle it.
- 2024: burial typology and its interpretive limits.
How to prepare it in one sitting
- Learn four or five sites with their type — Brahmagiri, Adichanallur, Maski, Vangchhia, Junapani.
- Learn the burial types: cists, dolmens, cairn circles, urn burials, rock-cut caves, and which regions favour which.
- Hold one line on iron, one on the Sangam connection, and one on the limits of dating. That is enough for any of the four framings.
Every question above, already answered
Knowing the questions is half the work. The other half is seeing what a full-mark answer to each one looks like — not a hint or a bullet outline, but a complete answer at the mark and the word limit, with the historians named inside the argument.
The History Optional PYQ Master Pack carries the same for every question the Commission has set since 1985, across the whole syllabus.

- Model answers with historiography — the debate cited where it belongs, not bolted on
- Map sections solved — the full 50-mark section, every year
- PDF plus online access — any device, permanently, no subscription

How to use this topic list
Reading a question list feels like preparation and is not. Three sittings turn it into marks.
Sitting 1 — sort before you read (30 minutes)
- Copy the questions above into the threads identified in the previous section.
- Note which thread has gone longest without being asked — that is your priority, not the one you find most interesting.
Sitting 2 — write three answers cold (45 minutes)
- Pick the most recent question from three different threads.
- Seven minutes for a 10-marker, fifteen for a 20-marker. Stop when the time is up, even mid-sentence.
- Mark every place you wanted a historian’s name and could not produce one.
Sitting 3 — compare, then rewrite (45 minutes)
- Put your script beside the model answer for the same question.
- Compare structure first: opening claim, evidence, counter-view, judgement.
- Rewrite your weakest answer using that structure and no new content. Most candidates gain four to six marks from structure alone.
Two ways to prepare this optional
Two routes, depending on what is actually missing.
