What UPSC keeps asking about Mughal culture
The questions fall into four threads. Painting and architecture between them account for nearly two-thirds of the unit, and each has a specific framing the examiner returns to.
1. Mughal painting and its European and Rajput connections (1994, 2000, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2026)
- Twelve questions — the single most repeated subject in Mughal history.
- The European impact on Mughal painting has been asked three times recently (2019, 2023, 2026). Know the Jesuit gifts, perspective, shading and halo motifs, with named artists — Abul Hasan, Mansur, Bishandas.
- Painting as a mirror of society (2011, 2017), Rajput painting as Mughal in style and Rajput in content (2022), Malwa (2024). Jahangir as the zenith (2000).
2. Architecture — syncretism, Persian influence, the Shah Jahan zenith (1998, 2001, 2002, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025, 2026)
- Akbar’s building (2002), Shah Jahan’s perfection (2001, 2018), tomb architecture (2021), provincial styles (2025).
- The dominant framing is synthesis: syncretic character (2023), Persian traditions (2026), “built like Titans, finished like jewellers” (2019). Name the building for every claim — Humayun’s tomb, Fatehpur Sikri, the Taj, the Jami Masjid.
3. Literature, translation and language (1989, 1992, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2025)
- Official histories and autobiography (1992, 2002 on the Babarnama, 2015 on the Tuzuk-i-Babri), Persian and Arabic historiography (2010).
- The newer questions are about the vernacular and Sanskrit: Hindi literature (2018, 2025), the status of Sanskrit (2019), translation of Sanskrit texts into Persian (2020).
- Composite culture (1989) is the umbrella argument that ties these together.
4. Music, science and technology (2010, 2013, 2022)
- Gharanas as products of patronage (2022), science and technology (2013), Indian response to European technology (2010).
- The least asked thread — a single prepared answer on each covers it.
The model answers to this unit, in one place
Knowing the questions is half the work. The other half is seeing what a full-mark answer to each one looks like — not a hint or a bullet outline, but a complete answer at the mark and the word limit, with the historians named inside the argument.
The History Optional PYQ Master Pack carries the same for every question the Commission has set since 1985, across the whole syllabus.
- PYQs 1985–2025, arranged topic-wise — revise a theme and see every way it has been asked
- Model answers with historiography — the debate cited where it belongs, not bolted on
- Map sections solved — the full 50-mark section, every year
- PDF plus online access — any device, permanently, no subscription
₹1,499 (regular ₹2,500). One-time payment, instant access.
How to use this topic list
Reading a question list feels like preparation and is not. Three sittings turn it into marks.
Sitting 1 — sort before you read (30 minutes)
- Copy the questions above into the threads identified in the previous section.
- Note which thread has gone longest without being asked — that is your priority, not the one you find most interesting.
Sitting 2 — write three answers cold (45 minutes)
- Pick the most recent question from three different threads.
- Seven minutes for a 10-marker, fifteen for a 20-marker. Stop when the time is up, even mid-sentence.
- Mark every place you wanted a historian’s name and could not produce one.
Sitting 3 — compare, then rewrite (45 minutes)
- Put your script beside the model answer for the same question.
- Compare structure first: opening claim, evidence, counter-view, judgement.
- Rewrite your weakest answer using that structure and no new content. Most candidates gain four to six marks from structure alone.
Two ways to prepare this optional
Two routes, depending on what is actually missing.
