What UPSC keeps asking about the Regional States

Four decades of questions fall into five threads. Two of them — the Pallava-Chalukya conflict and South Indian temple architecture — account for almost half the unit and have both been asked again in the last three papers.

1. The Pallava-Chalukya conflict and the struggle for the south (1985, 1991, 2000, 2004, 2024, 2025)

The oldest thread in the unit and suddenly the hottest — set in consecutive years in 2024 and 2025.
The recent framing asks for circumstances and course, not a list of battles: control of the Krishna-Tungabhadra doab, the Vengi question, and why neither side could finish the other.
2001 widened it to the tripartite struggle of Rashtrakutas, Pratiharas and Palas — the northern version of the same question.

2. Temple architecture and regional styles (1986, 1988, 1997, 2009, 2017, 2020, 2026)

The largest thread. Pallava contributions (1986, 1988, 1997), regional variation in early South Indian temples (2009, 2020), the origin of temple architecture by region (2017), Hoysala innovation (2026).
Prepare a sequence you can reproduce: rock-cut mandapas at Mamallapuram, the Shore temple, Kailasanatha at Kanchi, Aihole-Badami-Pattadakal, then the Hoysala star-plan. Name the temple for every claim.

3. Bhakti and religious change (2022, 2023)

Newly active. 2022 asked for the characteristics of Tamil Bhakti; 2023 asked for its tenets, spread and impact, and whether the post-Gupta period was remarkable for religious expansion.
Alvars and Nayanars, the vernacular hymn, temple as institution — and the social question of how far Bhakti challenged caste.

4. State, society and the vernacular (1990, 1995, 2021, 2026)

The 2021 paper set three questions here: land grants and agrarian expansion into non-arable tracts, varnashrama and social complexity, vernacular literature and regional identity.
2026 asked what beyond administrative efficiency made the Cholas an imperial power. Local self-government, temple economy and naval reach are the expected answer.

5. Trade, guilds and the Arabs (1995, 2010, 2015)

Guilds and trade organisations asked twice in five years (2010, 2015), then silent for a decade — which makes it overdue.
The Arab arrival (1995) is worth one prepared paragraph on Sind and the western coast trade.
