Dampa Tiger Reserve

  • Dampa Tiger Reserve is located in the Lushai Hills (Mizo Hills), in the Mamit District of Mizoram in northeastern India.
  • Though no tiger was found in the reserve in 2018 tiger census, recently a tiger was spotted.
  • It has one of the highest clouded leopard (VU) populations in South & South East Asia.
  • The highest point of the Dampa Tiger Reserve is the Chhawrpialtlang with an altitude of 1095m. Other peaks are Dampatlang (869 M) and Pathlawilunglentlang (780 m).
  • The western side of the Dampa Tiger Reserve is drained by the Khawthlangtuipui River (also known as the Kaladan River). The eastern side is drained by the Teirei River.
  • Major Fauna: Tiger, Indian leopard, clouded leopard.
  • Major Avifauna: Great hornbill.
  • Threats: Shifting cultivationoil palm & teak plantations.

Murlen National Park

  • Murlen National Park is located in the Champhai district of Mizoram. It is located close to the Chin Hills of Myanmar. It is to the south of Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Murlen National Park is located in the Mizo Hills of Mizoram. The Mizo Hills (Lushai Hills) are a part of the larger Patkai range.
  • Some of the major rivers near the Murlen National Park include the Tiau RiverTuivai River and Champhai River.
  • Vegetation: Semi-evergreen and sub-montane forests.
  • Major Fauna: Tiger, leopard, Malayan giant squirrel, Himalayan black bear, serow, hoolock gibbon.
  • Major Avifauna: Mrs. Hume’s pheasant (NT), the state bird of Mizoram and hill myna.

Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park

  • Phawngpui National Park is situated in the district of Lawngtlai, near the border with Myanmar (Burma).
  • It covers the entire Phawngpui mountain or Blue Mountain (2,157 m), the highest peak of Mizoram.
    • Phawngpui Hills situated in Mizo Hills (Lushai Hills). Mizo Hills (Lushai Hills) are part of the larger Patkai range.
  • Kolodyne River flows along the eastern side of Phawngpui National Park and forms the international border between Mizoram (India) and Myanmar.
  • Major Fauna: Slow loris, tiger, leopard, serow, goral.
  • Mrs. Hume’s pheasant (NT)the state bird of Mizoram.

Wildlife Sanctuaries of Mizoram

Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Lunglei District of Mizoram.
  • Lushai Hills; It is to the southwest of Murlen National Park and to the southeast of Dampa Tiger Reserve.

Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary

  • The Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Champhai district of Mizoram, eastern part of Mizoram. North of Murlen National Park in the Lushai Hills.

Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Lawngtlai District of Mizoram, southwestern part of Mizoram.
  • It is situated in a valley through which the Ngengpui River flows. The river flows through the valley where the sanctuary is situated, eventually joining the Chhimtuipui (Kolodyne) River to the south.

Tawi Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Tawi Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Serchhip district of Mizoram, Southwest of Murlen National Park in the Lushai Hills.

Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Lunglei District of Mizoram.
  • The sanctuary lies close to the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Tokalo Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Tokalo Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Siaha district of Mizoram, South of Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • It is home to the largest lake in Mizoram, known as Palak Lake.

Ramsar Sites of Mizoram

Pala Wetland

  • Pala Tipo/Pala Lake/Palak Dil is a natural lake in the the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot
  • The lake is a major component of the Palak Wildlife Sanctuary and it supports the major biodiversity of the sanctuary.
  • Major Fauna: Sambar Deer (VU), Barking Deer (Muntjac – LC)Hoolock Gibbon (EN)
