UPSC Interview Date 2026: When Personality Tests Begin and How e-Summon Letters Work

The question every one of the 2,526 shortlisted candidates asked within an hour of the written result is the one UPSC deliberately did not answer: when do the interviews start? The UPSC interview date 2026 has not been notified. The written-result notice of 5 November 2026 says only that Personality Test dates will be announced later and that e-Summon Letters will be released on the UPSC website for download. What the Commission has published, though, is enough to plan with precision — a mandatory submission window that must close before any letter is issued, a fixed venue, and a prior cycle run on almost identical dates. This page sets out what is officially fixed, what can reasonably be projected from the CSE 2025 timeline, and how to prepare without a date.

Quick Answer

UPSC has not announced the CSE 2026 Personality Test dates. Two things are fixed by the 5 November 2026 notice: shortlisted candidates must update their application details at upsconline.nic.in between 11 and 25 November 2026 (until 6:00 PM), and no e-Summon Letter will be issued to anyone who does not. Because the letter depends on that submission, interviews cannot begin before the window closes on 25 November. In the CSE 2025 cycle the written result came on 12 November 2025, the submission window ran 13–27 November 2025, and interviews began in November 2025, continuing into early 2026. CSE 2026 is running about a week ahead of that, so the reasonable planning assumption is first boards from around early December 2026, with the schedule extending over several months. All Personality Tests are held at the UPSC office, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi–110069. Treat every projected date here as a planning estimate, not a notification.

Why Interviews Cannot Begin Before 25 November 2026

This is the one hard inference available, and it is worth stating because it rules out the earliest rumours. The notice makes the e-Summon Letter conditional on completing the online submission. The window for that submission closes at 6:00 PM on 25 November 2026. UPSC then has to process those submissions, allot candidates to boards, build a sitting-by-sitting schedule and publish the letters with enough notice for candidates to travel to Delhi.

Nothing in that sequence can be compressed into a few days. A first sitting before the final week of November is therefore not realistically possible, and anyone circulating a date earlier than that is guessing.

What the CSE 2025 Cycle Tells Us

The most reliable guide to an unannounced UPSC date is the same stage in the immediately preceding cycle, because the Commission’s internal process does not change much year to year. The comparison runs as follows:

StageCSE 2025 (actual)CSE 2026 (position today)
Mains written result12 November 20255 November 2026 — one week earlier
Online application-detail update13–27 November 202511–25 November 2026 — one week earlier, same length
Interviews commencedNovember 2025Not announced
Personality Tests in progressThrough to early 2026Not announced
VenueDholpur House, New DelhiDholpur House, New Delhi

Two observations follow. First, the structure is identical — a roughly fortnight-long submission window opening within a week of the result — and CSE 2026 is running almost exactly seven days ahead of CSE 2025 at every step so far. Second, in the 2025 cycle the first boards sat in the same month as the result, which is quick, and happened because the schedule was long.

Applying the same offset to 2026 gives a projected start for the first boards from around early December 2026, with the schedule running in batches over several months and the final result following some weeks after the last sitting. We are stating that as arithmetic on a precedent, not as information from the Commission.

A caution about long interview schedules

Personality Tests are not held in one block. UPSC runs them in forenoon and afternoon sittings across months, and individual sittings do get moved. In the CSE 2025 cycle, a set of afternoon Personality Tests scheduled for 22 January 2026 was rescheduled to 27 February 2026 on account of the full dress rehearsal for the Republic Day parade. Expect the same pattern of long schedules and occasional rescheduling, and do not build travel or professional commitments on an assumption that your slot is immovable.

How Candidates Are Allotted a Date

Candidates do not choose their slot and cannot usefully predict it. Board allocation and sitting are decided by the Commission and disclosed only with the e-Summon Letter, which names the board, the date and the reporting time. There is no published rule tying a slot to roll number, state, optional subject or anything else a candidate can infer from, and attempts to read a pattern into past schedules are not worth your time.

The practical consequence is that your personal interview date is unknown until the letter appears, and that letters do not all appear at once — they are released in tranches as the schedule is built. A candidate who has not received one while others have is not in trouble; they are later in the schedule.

How to get your e-Summon Letter

  1. Complete the application-detail update at upsconline.nic.in before 6:00 PM on 25 November 2026. Keep the acknowledgement and the reference number the portal generates.
  2. Watch upsc.gov.in for the Personality Test schedule and the e-Summon Letter release. UPSC does not send SMS or email alerts for this, and it does not post paper letters.
  3. Download and print your letter as soon as it appears, and read the instructions it carries — reporting time, board and documentation requirements are on the letter itself.
  4. If you cannot download yours, the notice directs you to contact the Commission by letter, telephone or email rather than waiting.

Planning Without a Date

An unannounced date is not an excuse to wait. Prepare on the assumption that you are in the first batch, because the cost of being ready early is nothing and the cost of being called in the first tranche unprepared is the examination.

  • Before 25 November: complete the online submission, and settle your service and cadre preference order properly — these are the entries your board will question most predictably. Our field-by-field guide to UPSC DAF 2 covers each one.
  • By the end of November: audit every original certificate, checking that reservation and relaxation documents were issued on or before 27 February 2026, the CSE Prelims 2026 application closing date. Replacement certificates take weeks — our UPSC interview documents checklist sets out the full set.
  • From early December: treat yourself as callable at two weeks’ notice. Keep a bag of documents assembled, and keep Delhi travel feasible at short notice.
  • Through the interview period: file the Attestation Form on the DoP&T portal once the window opens, rather than leaving it to the week interviews conclude.
  • In parallel: if you remain eligible on attempts and age, keep a Prelims thread running. On the CSE 2026 numbers, about 1,593 of the 2,526 shortlisted candidates will not be recommended against the 933 advertised vacancies. Per the official annual calendar, CSE 2027 is notified in January 2027 with the Preliminary Examination in May 2027 — confirm the dates on our UPSC calendar page.

What a date announcement will and will not tell you

When UPSC publishes the Personality Test schedule, it gives the period over which interviews will be held. It does not give you your own date — that arrives only with your e-Summon Letter, along with your board. Candidates routinely mistake the first for the second and conclude they have months when they have weeks.

For the stage itself and how its 275 marks sit in final merit, see our UPSC Personality Test 2026 guide. Frequently Asked Questions

UPSC has not announced it. The written-result notice of 5 November 2026 states that Personality Test dates will be announced later and that e-Summon Letters will be released on the UPSC website. Any specific date currently circulating is not from the Commission.

Interviews cannot begin before the online application-detail window closes at 6:00 PM on 25 November 2026, because the notice makes the e-Summon Letter conditional on that submission. In the CSE 2025 cycle the result came on 12 November 2025, the window ran 13–27 November 2025, and interviews began in November 2025. CSE 2026 is running about a week ahead of that schedule, which points to first boards from around early December 2026. This is a projection from precedent, not a notified date.

Several months. UPSC holds Personality Tests in forenoon and afternoon sittings in batches rather than in one block. In the CSE 2025 cycle, sittings ran from November 2025 into early 2026, and individual sittings were rescheduled — a set of afternoon tests set for 22 January 2026 moved to 27 February 2026 on account of the Republic Day parade full dress rehearsal.

At the UPSC office, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi-110069. There are no regional centres for the Personality Test; every shortlisted candidate attends in Delhi.

From your e-Summon Letter, which names your board, date and reporting time. The published schedule only gives the overall period. Letters are released in tranches on the UPSC website as the schedule is built, so not receiving one while others have simply means you are later in the schedule.

No. The notice states that e-Summon Letters will be released on the UPSC website for download and that no paper letters will be issued. UPSC does not send SMS or email alerts for this. If you cannot download yours, the notice directs you to contact the Commission by letter, telephone or email.

Update and submit your application details online at upsconline.nic.in before 6:00 PM on 25 November 2026, including your service and cadre preferences. If you had declared yourself as appearing for your qualifying degree, upload proof of having passed in the same window. Candidates who do not complete this will not be issued an e-Summon Letter.

Board allocation and sittings are decided by the Commission, and candidates do not choose their slot. Requests are not part of the published process, and the practical approach is to keep travel to Delhi feasible at short notice from early December onwards.

UPSC has not indicated a date. It follows the conclusion of the Personality Tests by some weeks. The notice does say that mark sheets will be uploaded to the UPSC website within 15 days of the final result and will remain available for 30 days — a window candidates busy with appointment paperwork often miss.

On the CSE 2026 numbers, around 1,593 of the 2,526 shortlisted candidates will not be recommended against the 933 advertised vacancies, so for most candidates a parallel Prelims thread is the rational hedge if they remain eligible on attempts and age. Per the official annual calendar, CSE 2027 is notified in January 2027 with the Preliminary Examination in May 2027.
