B. R. Ambedkar chose the word annihilation deliberately. In Annihilation of Caste (1936) — the presidential address the Jat-Pat Todak Mandal of Lahore cancelled rather than hear — he argues that caste cannot be reformed, softened or outgrown. It must be destroyed as an idea, because caste is "a notion, a state of the mind".
