Indian coal splits into two genetically distinct systems. Gondwana coal, about 250 million years old, is drift-origin, accumulated in fault-bounded rift troughs of the peninsular shield, and supplies about 98 per cent of reserves and 99 per cent of production. Tertiary coal, 15-60 million years old, is in-situ and confined to the extra-peninsula.
