‘The methods of sociology are inadequate in understanding the complex social phenomena.’ Discuss. (2026)
The charge is as old as the discipline: methods borrowed from natural science are said to be too blunt for a reality that is meaningful, reflexive and multiply caused. The claim has force, but the verdict depends on the standard applied — against Newtonian prediction sociology fails, against its own object it does not.
The case for inadequacy
- No controlled experiment. People cannot be randomly assigned to caste, class or gender, so Émile Durkheim had to make concomitant variation, borrowed from John Stuart Mill’s canons, a substitute in The Rules of Sociological Method (1895).
- Measurement outruns meaning. Aaron Cicourel (Method and Measurement in Sociology, 1964) called quantification in sociology “measurement by fiat”: precision bought before the meaning of the category is settled. Herbert Blumer (“Sociological Analysis and the Variable”, 1956) added that sociology has no generic variables — “religiosity” means different things in different settings — and that variable analysis leaps from stimulus to response, skipping the interpretation where the action happens.
- Official facts are manufactured. Jack Douglas (The Social Meanings of Suicide, 1967) showed suicide rates to be the outcome of negotiation among coroners, families and priests, a point Barry Hindess generalised to state statistics.
- Indian illustration. The World Health Organization’s May 2022 model estimated 4.7 million excess deaths in India for 2020–21 against 4.81 lakh registered COVID-19 deaths; the Union government rejected the modelling, citing its own civil registration data. Whichever figure is nearer the truth, the episode shows how much of a complex event escapes routine instruments.
- The object answers back. Anthony Giddens’s double hermeneutic — sociologists interpret an already interpreted world, and their concepts re-enter it — has no equivalent in chemistry.
Why the charge is overstated
- Complexity is met by plurality, not failure. Durkheim’s Suicide (1897) proved a rate can be explained socially; Max Weber required interpretation to be adequate at the level of meaning and causally adequate.
- Methods are self-correcting. India’s Time Use Survey 2024 measured what labour statistics had missed — women aged 15–59 spending 305 minutes a day on unpaid domestic work — and the Periodic Labour Force Survey moved to a calendar-year cycle in 2025 with a sample 2.65 times larger.
- Thomas Kuhn (The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, 1962) showed natural science is not the theory-neutral enterprise the charge assumes; George Ritzer reads sociology as a multiple-paradigm science, not an immature one.
Conclusion
Sociology’s methods are inadequate only to a borrowed ideal of prediction. Against complexity the honest reply is triangulation: rates to establish that a pattern exists, ethnography to establish what it means, and candour about what the instrument cannot see.
