Classical stratification theory was largely gender-blind. It ranked families, classes and castes, and assumed that a woman's place in the hierarchy followed from a man's. Joan Acker's article "Women and Social Stratification: A Case of Intellectual Sexism" (1973) exposed this bias, and feminist sociology has since rebuilt the field around it.
