A micro carbon sink is the removal and storage of carbon dioxide by microscopic marine organisms — phytoplankton (diatoms, dinoflagellates, coccolithophores, cyanobacteria such as Prochlorococcus) and heterotrophic bacteria and archaea — as distinct from the “macro” or vegetated blue carbon sinks of mangroves, seagrass meadows and salt marshes.
