A watershed is a geo-hydrological unit bounded by the water divide — the ridge line separating headstreams that drain to different systems — fixed by slope, never by tenure. India is delineated into 35 basins, 112 catchments, 500 sub-catchments and about 3,200 watersheds, subdivided into milli, micro (100-1,000 ha) and mini units.
