Tylor's classic 1871 formulation, is that "complex whole" of knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and habits acquired by a person as a member of society — for the geographer it is the learned, shared, transmitted and spatially expressed design for living that converts undifferentiated space into meaningful place.
