The standard template of regional integration is European: rich, liberal-democratic states pooling sovereignty in supranational institutions. ASEAN, founded at Bangkok on 8 August 1967 by five post-colonial states, reversed that logic. It used cooperation to protect newly won sovereignty, not to transcend it, which makes it a distinctively Third World model.
