Should I draw a map in every Geography Optional answer?

No. You should include a visual in almost every answer, but a map is only one of five kinds, and it is the wrong one whenever the demand is conceptual, thematic or historiographic rather than spatial. A map drawn to fill space is worse than no map: evaluators mark it "not relevant", and it signals that you did not know what to write. Ask whether the demand has a spatial or processual component. If not, your visual is a table, a schematic or a process diagram.

How many words should a 20-mark Geography Optional answer be?

Around 250 words, spread over roughly one and a half pages including the visual. There is no printed word limit on 15- and 20-markers — the limit is printed only on the 10-mark sub-parts of Q1 and Q5, where it is about 150 words. The real constraint on a 20-marker is the 13–14 minutes it can be given if all five questions are to be finished.

Should I write headings labelled Introduction, Body and Conclusion?

No. Write the introduction, body and conclusion; do not label them. The examiner reads the answer as one continuous object rather than scoring three parts separately, and labelling the structure announces a template without adding information. Sub-headings inside the body are different — those are essential, and they should be named for the thing being discussed ("Continental Shelf", "Backwash Effects"), not for their function.

How do I make a Paper II answer look different from a General Studies answer?

Apply one or two of five conversions to content you already have: hook a point to a named theory, open with the disciplinary rather than the general definition, drop your examples one level of spatial resolution (belt or district rather than state), frame growth in an explicit spatial model, and use a model as a diagnosis rather than as a description. None of these requires new information. They re-encode what you already know in the language of the discipline.

Is it possible to score 300+ in Geography Optional?

Yes, and recent scores in the 300–327 range confirm it, but the honest framing is that 300+ is not a different quantity of study. Candidates who have made hundred-mark jumps in a single cycle did so by changing how they wrote — regional resolution instead of state-level examples, a visual in every answer, an appraise layer before the conclusion, and a clock plan that got all five questions finished. The score band above 300 is small; the band between 250 and 280 is very crowded, and almost everyone in it knows enough to be above it.

How much time should the Paper II map question take?

Fifteen minutes for all ten entries, including plotting and the 30-word significance notes. Most candidates start at seven or eight minutes for the plotting alone and bring it down with a daily fifteen-minute drill. It is twenty guaranteed marks with no interpretive risk, so it should never be the part you run out of time for — and plotting accuracy is itself marked, so a misplaced Delhi or Kolkata costs directly.

Should I decide in advance whether to attempt more from Physical or Human Geography?

No. Prepare both sections properly and take the decision in the hall. Fixing your split months ahead has cost candidates marks in both directions — one lost easy physical marks by committing to human geography, another improved by nearly fifty marks partly by switching his extra question to human geography in a year when those questions were easier. Do the compulsory questions first, lock the one mandatory pick from each section, and decide the third last.

What do I do when a question uses a term I have never seen?

Place its family and build from the process. If you can tell that a term is a glacial erosional feature, or a coastal depositional one, you can construct a defensible answer from what you know about that process — formation, associated landforms, a labelled sketch, an example. It will not be a full-mark answer, but a structured partial answer scores and a blank does not. This is also why roughly two-fifths of recent 10-markers, which turn on a single named term, are best met with a glossary rather than a technique.
