Although sociology, as a subject of study, overarches all disciplines in social sciences yet it maintains its distinctiveness. Comment. (2026)
The statement makes two claims at once: that sociology’s reach extends across the whole field of the social sciences, and that it nonetheless remains a discipline in its own right. Both hold, but only if distinctiveness is located in a perspective rather than in a fenced-off subject matter.
Why sociology overarches
- The synthetic school — Émile Durkheim, L. T. Hobhouse, Pitirim Sorokin, Morris Ginsberg, Karl Mannheim — held that social life is a whole that cannot be carved at the joints without distortion. Durkheim’s scheme of social morphology, social physiology and general sociology makes room for the economy, law, religion and polity as special sociologies.
- Sociology is therefore a general science of society, studying relations between classes of social phenomena — the religious and the economic, the political and the familial — which the specialised sciences hold apart.
- Border traffic confirms the reach: economic sociology, political sociology, historical sociology and social psychology all sit in the overlap.

Illustration. The Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2025 puts female labour force participation at 40.0 per cent against 79.1 per cent for males. Economics records the gap; the Time Use Survey 2024 shows why it persists — women spend 289 minutes a day on unpaid domestic services against 88 minutes for men. The qualification
Georg Simmel and the formalistic school warned that a discipline without limits becomes a “science of everything”. Sorokin’s counter-objection is equally sound: form cannot be studied without content. The honest position is that disciplinary boundaries are administrative conveniences of the nineteenth-century university, not natural joints in reality.
Conclusion
Sociology overarches because every social science studies the same human beings; it stays distinct because it alone asks what is social about their conduct — how it is patterned by group life, structure and shared meaning. Overlap is a sign of the discipline’s health, not of lost identity.
