Anthropology Optional Booklist for UPSC: Best Books for Paper 1 & Paper 2

Anthropology does not need a shelf of books. Most high scorers read one main source for each block of the syllabus, revise it several times, and fill gaps from notes and previous year questions. This list gives that one source for every unit of Paper I and Paper II, the supplementary material worth having, and the books that are often recommended but add little for the exam.

Three rules before you buy

  1. One main book per block. Read it fully, then revise it; add a second book only for a sub-topic it does not cover.
  2. Let the PYQs decide depth. Every unit page lists its questions by sub-topic. Read more where UPSC asks more.
  3. Notes after books, not instead of them. Use notes to condense and revise; use the books to understand.

Useful for both papers

  • IGNOU MA Anthropology study material. Free, syllabus-aligned and good for units the textbooks treat briefly (methods, applied anthropology, demography).
  • SCERT Kerala Anthropology textbooks, Class XI and XII. The only school textbooks in the subject, and a gentle start for complete beginners. NCERT has no anthropology textbook; its Class XII Biology chapters on inheritance, the molecular basis of inheritance and evolution help with Paper I genetics.
  • Coaching notes. Many toppers have used the Braintree material (Muniratnam Reddy) and similar class notes for compact revision. Treat any set of notes as a revision aid, checked against the syllabus.
  • Free LotusArise notes. All 87 unit-wise notes on the notes index, written to the syllabus with diagrams and the PYQs of each topic.

What you can skip

  • Large university treatises on single topics (full monographs on kinship or on primatology). Read their summaries in the main books instead.
  • Sociology textbooks such as Ram Ahuja’s Indian Social System as a main source for Paper II. They are useful background but are written for sociology, not anthropology.
  • Multiple physical anthropology books. P. Nath plus a diagram source covers what UPSC asks.

How to read with this list

Follow the order in the strategy guide: Ember and Ember with Majumdar and Madan first, then Makhan Jha for theories, then P. Nath with Bhattacharya, then the two Hasnain books with Vidyarthi and Rai for Paper II. After each unit, open its unit page and attempt the questions since 2013 before moving on.
