Currently, As of 30 March 2024, there are a total of 806 districts in India. These districts are spread across 28 states and 8 union territories. Districts are an administrative units of Indian states and UTs. They are further divided into tehsils and talukas wherever needed. These districts serve as a primary point for policy implementation.
The number of district keeps changing from time to time as per the administrative convenience. This number of districts has been steadily increasing in recent years due to the creation of new districts for better administration and development.

Largest District in India

Smallest District in India
- One of the four districts in the Indian union territory of Puducherry is Mahe. It encompasses the entire Mahé region.
- Mahé is India’s tiniest district in terms of area.
- North Malabar in Kerala State encircles the entire Mahé district.
