‘Family jointness still continues unaffected by the differences of religion, caste, urbanization and occupation’. Elucidate

‘Family jointness still continues unaffected by the differences of religion, caste, urbanization and occupation’. Elucidate (1991)

The statement asserts two things: that jointness persists, and that it persists uniformly. The first is well supported by Indian evidence; the second is the claim’s weak point. Jointness survives every one of these differences, but it survives differently in each — which is why “unaffected” must be qualified even while the substance of the statement is upheld.

What the claim gets right

Jointness is best understood, following I. P. Desai, as a structure of obligation rather than a residential arrangement. Obligation travels where co-residence cannot, which is why it crosses the four boundaries the statement names.

DifferenceEvidence that jointness survives itWhere the claim overstates
ReligionThe Pew Research Center’s cross-national study of religion and living arrangements (2019) found Indian Hindus and non-Hindus almost indistinguishable — roughly 55 and 51 per cent in extended-family households, with mean sizes of 5.7 and 6.2. Muslim and Christian households in India follow regional, not doctrinal, patternsMuslim personal law distributes shares to heirs immediately on death, including daughters, so estates fragment on a different schedule; matrilineal Nayar, Khasi and Garo jointness rests on the sibling rather than the conjugal bond
CasteOnce an upper-caste, propertied pattern, jointness is now found across castes; Sanskritising and newly prosperous communities adopt it as a status formPauline Kolenda, synthesising twenty-six studies, found complex households markedly commoner among landowning castes. Jointness tracks property, and the landless can rarely sustain it
UrbanisationMilton Singer, M. S. Gore on the Aggarwals of Delhi and M. S. A. Rao all found urban residence failing to nuclearise families; Sylvia Vatuk found village kinship patterns intact in the older wards of MeerutThe urban poor are defeated by housing, not by values; tenement space, not preference, sets the limit
OccupationBusiness and professional families keep undivided property, pooled capital and joint decision-making even when dispersed; salaried migrants remit and sponsor kinOccupational dispersal converts a joint household into a joint family spread across locations — real jointness, but not the same institution

Why jointness persists

  • Functional necessity. In an economy with thin social security, kin supply credit, childcare, eldercare, job information and insurance against illness. Michael Anderson’s Lancashire finding, that early industrialisation increased kin co-residence, is the comparative parallel.
  • Property. Undivided ancestral property gives coparceners a standing interest in remaining joint.
  • Ideology. K. M. Kapadia found that even members of nuclear households overwhelmingly affirmed jointness as desirable.

Where “unaffected” fails

Jointness is systematically patterned. It is higher in the Gangetic plain than in central, western or eastern India — a regional variation Irawati Karve anticipated. It varies with landholding, with class, and with the availability of housing. And it has changed in kind: the radius of jointness has contracted to parents, sons and brothers, and its content has shifted from common production to mutual obligation.

Conclusion

The statement is right in its substance and wrong in its adverb. Jointness has proved indifferent to religion, caste, city and occupation as a principle; as a practice it is refracted by each. What continues is not the classical joint household but the obligation that once required it — families structurally nuclear and functionally joint.
