“What is Weberian critique of Marxist notion of social stratification?” (2017)
Max Weber‘s sociology is often read as a long argument with the legacy of Karl Marx. He did not dismiss Marx: he agreed that property is the most basic class division. His critique targeted a monocausal and teleological reading of stratification, in which everything flows from ownership of the means of production and history moves inevitably towards revolution.
The Marxist notion under critique
For Marx and Friedrich Engels, stratification is class; class is a relation to the means of production; law, state, ideas and prestige are a superstructure raised on this base. Capitalism polarises society, workers become conscious of their exploitation, and revolution abolishes classes.
Lines of the Weberian critique
- Against economic determinism. Status and power are independent orders, not reflections of the base. Weber insisted that economically conditioned power is not the same as power as such: people seek honour and domination for their own sake. The Protestant Ethic showed religious ideas shaping economic conduct, reversing the causal arrow Marx assumed.
- Class drawn too narrowly. Ownership is decisive but not exhaustive; skills and education create distinct market situations, and so distinct classes, among the propertyless.
- No polarisation. Capitalist firms and the modern state need rational administration, so white-collar strata expand, while displaced small proprietors move into clerical or skilled work rather than sinking into the unskilled mass.
- No automatic consciousness. Classes are aggregates of people with similar chances, not self-aware groups. Weber dismissed as pseudo-scientific the habit of attributing to a class interests its members do not perceive; collective action arises only when the causes of one’s situation are transparent.
- Power is plural. Parties and bureaucracies are centres of power in their own right, so the state is not merely an instrument of capital.
- Pre-capitalist societies misread. Estates and status groups, not classes, ordered most of history; Indian caste, examined in The Religion of India (1916), was the clearest case.
- Socialism as bureaucracy. Abolishing private property would concentrate control in officials, deepening rather than ending domination.
How the critique was carried forward
- David Lockwood showed that clerks’ work and market situations separated them from manual workers even at similar pay.
- Frank Parkin (Marxism and Class Theory: A Bourgeois Critique, 1979) generalised status monopolies into social closure, through exclusion and usurpation, applicable to credentials, race and gender.
Marxist rejoinders
- The critique describes distribution and neglects production: market classes are effects of the capital–labour relation, not independent causes, as Erik Olin Wright argued.
- Nicos Poulantzas placed white-collar employees in a “new petty bourgeoisie” defined by their role in the social division of labour, not by market rewards.
- Weber himself conceded that property tends, over time, to become a qualification for honour.
An Indian test
In Sukanya Shantha v. Union of India (3 October 2024), the Supreme Court struck down state prison manual rules that reserved sweeping and other “menial” work for prisoners from communities supposedly “accustomed” to it, holding them violative of Articles 14, 15, 17, 21 and 23. Here labour was allocated by inherited caste rank, not by ownership or market bargaining: a status order organising work, as the Weberian critique predicts. That the same communities remain among the poorest shows status and class reinforcing each other, which Marxists would stress.
Conclusion
The Weberian critique did not overturn Marx so much as decentre him. Property remains the deepest cleavage, but honour and organised power are separate currencies that can be converted into, or turned against, economic advantage. Neo-Marxist and neo-Weberian analysis alike now work on the ground Weber opened.
