Halford Mackinder stated the original thesis in “The Geographical Pivot of History” (1904): a three-tier world of Pivot Area, Inner or Marginal Crescent and Outer or Insular Crescent, in which the interior of Eurasia was inaccessible to sea power and therefore commanded the World Island.
