Reliability Is Necessary but Not Sufficient for Validity

The Sociological Complication: Reflexive Subjects and the Double Hermeneutic

  • Physical measurement assumes an inert object; sociological measurement does not have this luxury, because the “object” is a person capable of interpreting the research situation and adjusting behaviour in response to it.
  • Weber’s Verstehen — the requirement that the sociologist grasp the subjective meaning an actor attaches to conduct — implies that any measuring instrument is itself an act of communication the respondent interprets, not a neutral recording device.
  • Anthony Giddens’ notion of the double hermeneutic sharpens this further: sociological categories circulate back into everyday common sense, so the concepts researchers use to measure society are themselves shaped by, and can reshape, the social world being measured — a complication with no equivalent in the physical sciences.
