“Write short note : Methods of science and sociology” (1995)

  • Early sociology, from Auguste Comte‘s “social physics” onward, sought legitimacy by borrowing the methods that had made the natural sciences successful, and Emile Durkheim carried this ambition furthest by insisting social facts be studied with the same rigour as things in the natural world.
  • Sociology has not imported these methods wholesale, however — each has had to be adapted to a subject matter (conscious, meaning-making human beings in irreducibly complex social settings) that natural science’s original methods were not designed for.
  • The following enumerates the specific methods sociology has borrowed and adapted from natural science, and notes where each adaptation runs into genuine limits.

Observation

  • The most basic scientific method — systematic, careful watching and recording of phenomena — carries over directly into sociology as structured observation (using a pre-set schedule of categories to record behaviour) and participant observation (the researcher joining the group being studied, associated with the ethnographic tradition).
  • Unlike the natural scientist observing inert matter, the sociological observer’s presence can itself alter what is being observed, and participant observation additionally risks the observer’s own perspective merging with that of the group studied, compromising the very distance observation is meant to secure.

The Comparative Method

  • Where natural science isolates variables through the controlled laboratory experiment, sociology substitutes the comparative method — examining the same variable across different groups, societies, or time periods — precisely because direct experimentation on society is usually impossible or unethical.
  • Durkheim‘s study of suicide is the paradigm case: unable to manipulate social integration experimentally, he instead compared suicide rates across religious communities (Protestant versus Catholic), across countries, and across marital-status categories, using J.S. Mill’s method of concomitant variation to isolate social integration and regulation as causal factors — what Durkheim himself termed indirect experimentation.
  • The comparative method functions, in effect, as sociology’s practical answer to the absence of a laboratory: society itself, viewed across its variation, becomes the source of the “controlled” comparisons a chemist would otherwise engineer.

Statistical and Correlational Analysis

  • Natural science’s reliance on measurement and quantification carries over into sociology’s use of large-scale statistical data — census figures, official records, survey aggregates — to establish correlations between variables and test hypotheses about their relationship.
  • This method allows sociology to move beyond impressionistic claims to patterns demonstrable across large populations, though correlation established this way still falls short of the causal certainty a controlled experiment can offer, since confounding variables cannot be fully eliminated after the fact the way they can be excluded in advance in a laboratory design.

The Survey as an Approximate Sample

  • Natural science experiments typically work with representative samples of a phenomenon; sociology’s survey method attempts an analogous logic, using probability sampling to draw inferences about a wider population from a manageable subset.
  • This adaptation is more cautious than the others: true random assignment of subjects to different “treatment” conditions, standard in natural-science experimental design, is rarely possible for most social phenomena — a researcher cannot randomly assign people to different levels of poverty, religion, or caste status the way a chemist assigns different concentrations of a reagent — so the survey approximates the natural-science sample without replicating its experimental control.
  • Where researchers do attempt genuine field experiments or natural experiments (relying on naturally occurring variation, such as the staggered rollout of a policy), these remain rare, opportunistic substitutes rather than a routine tool, precisely because deliberate experimental manipulation of social conditions runs into the same ethical and practical barriers noted above.
  • Sociology’s borrowing from natural science is thus real but selective: observation, comparison, and statistical analysis have been productively adapted, while the controlled experiment — natural science’s most powerful method — remains largely unavailable, forcing sociology to rely on approximations (comparison, correlation, sampling) rather than direct experimental control.
  • The discipline’s own methodological contribution has been precisely this adaptation: showing how scientific discipline can be exercised even where the classical experimental method cannot be applied, a lesson increasingly relevant as contemporary sociology turns to large observational datasets and natural-experiment designs to approximate causal inference where randomized trials remain impossible.
  • The net verdict is that sociology draws on science’s logic — systematic, evidence-based, hypothesis-testing inquiry — more successfully than it can replicate science’s specific techniques, which is why methodological pluralism, rather than a single borrowed method, has become the discipline’s working solution.
