- A hypothesis is a tentative, testable statement proposing a relationship between two or more variables, derived from existing theory, prior observation, or common sense, and put forward for empirical verification.
- It occupies the bridge position between theory and data: Robert Merton‘s emphasis on middle-range theory rests on exactly this — a theory is useful only insofar as it can generate hypotheses precise enough to be tested against evidence.
- A hypothesis is neither a proven fact nor a mere guess; it is, in Karl Popper‘s terms, a conjecture that earns scientific status only by being open to refutation.
- Not every hypothesis serves research equally well — a hypothesis can be logically well-formed yet practically useless if it is vague, untestable, or disconnected from theory, which is why sociological methodology specifies the qualities a good hypothesis must possess.
Qualities of a Good Hypothesis
- Clarity and precision of variables: the independent and dependent variables, and the relationship proposed between them, must be defined in operational, unambiguous terms rather than loose or emotive language.
- Testability and falsifiability: a hypothesis must be capable, in principle, of being shown wrong by evidence.
- This is Popper‘s falsifiability criterion — the mark distinguishing a scientific proposition from a metaphysical or ideological one is not that it can be confirmed, but that it forbids some conceivable observation.
- A hypothesis phrased so elastically that any outcome can be reconciled with it (e.g. explaining away every contrary case) fails this test and is not scientifically useful, however plausible it sounds.
- Specificity: it should address one relationship at a time, stated narrowly enough to be investigated with available techniques, rather than a sweeping claim that no single study could adjudicate.
- Grounding in existing theory: a good hypothesis is deduced from a body of theory or from the unexplained residue of prior research, not plucked arbitrarily — this ensures that confirming or refuting it actually adds to cumulative sociological knowledge rather than standing as an isolated finding.
- Parsimony: between two hypotheses that both fit the available facts, the simpler one — invoking fewer assumptions and variables — is preferable, since it is easier to test rigorously and less likely to be an artefact of overfitting the data.
- Relevance to a genuine research problem: it must speak to an actual gap or puzzle in knowledge, and it must not be a normative or value statement (a statement of what ought to be) disguised as an empirical claim.
A Concrete Illustration
- A poorly-formed hypothesis: “Poverty makes people bad.” — this is vague (undefined variables), non-operational (“bad” is a value judgement, not measurable), and untestable, since no observation could conceivably falsify it.
- A good hypothesis on the same theme: “Households below the poverty line exhibit higher rates of child school dropout than households above it.” — here the variables (income category, dropout rate) are precise and measurable, the relationship is directional and testable, and the statement is falsifiable by data.
- Contemporary large-scale, data-driven sociological research increasingly relies on such precisely specified, pre-registered hypotheses precisely to guard against the trap of vague, unfalsifiable claims that can be retrofitted to whatever pattern the data happens to show — a discipline-wide concern that has sharpened methodological rigour around hypothesis formulation in recent years.
- A good hypothesis is thus judged less by whether it later proves true than by whether it was formulated so as to be genuinely testable, specific, and theoretically anchored.
- It functions as the operational translation of a theoretical question into a form that empirical research can actually answer.
- Its quality lies at the very start of the research process — a well-built hypothesis disciplines the entire subsequent design, from variable selection to data collection, while a poorly built one guarantees inconclusive or meaningless results regardless of how carefully the later stages are executed.
