Amitabh Bachchan

  • Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India.
  • He started his career in the film industry in the late 1960s and became one of the most popular actors in India in the 1970s and 1980s.

V.P. Singh

  • Vishwanath Pratap Singh, popularly known as V.P. Singh, was an Indian politician and the 7th Prime Minister of India. He was born on June 25, 1931, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Singh started his political career as a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1958, but later joined politics and became a member of the Indian National Congress party.
  • He served in various government positions, including Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Defence.
  • In 1987, Singh became the Prime Minister of India, heading a coalition government formed by the Janata Dal and other parties.
  • During his tenure, he introduced several economic and social reforms, including implementing the Mandal Commission recommendations, which provided reservations in education and government jobs for people from socially and educationally backward classes.
  • Singh’s government was also responsible for launching Operation Black Thunder to flush out terrorists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1988.
  • Singh resigned as Prime Minister in 1990 after the Congress party withdrew its support to his government.
  • He continued to be involved in politics and was instrumental in forming the Jan Morcha, a political party that later merged with the Janata Dal.
  • Singh was known for his integrity and commitment to social justice. He was also a writer and authored several books, including a memoir titled “Memoirs of a Wanderer”.

Pandit Ravi Shankar

  • Pandit Ravi Shankar was born on April 7, 1920, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • He was trained in classical Indian music by his guru Allauddin Khan, a renowned musician and composer.
  • Shankar was known for his innovative approach to music, and his collaboration with Western musicians helped popularise Indian classical music worldwide.
  • He performed at several international music festivals, including the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and the Woodstock Festival in 1969.
  • Shankar also composed music for several films, including Satyajit Ray’s “Pather Panchali” and Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi”.
  • In addition to his music career, Shankar was a humanitarian and worked to promote peace and understanding between cultures. He was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, in 1986.

Majrooh Sultanpuri

  • Born in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh as Asrar ul Hassan Khan, Majrooh Sultanpuri was one of the finest Indian Urdu poets along with being a lyricist and songwriter in Bollywood (with a career spanning six decades).
  • He was one of the dominating musical forces in Indian Cinema in the 1950s and early 1960s, receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement in 1993 – making him the first lyricist to win.

Dhyan Chand

  • Born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in a Rajput family, Major Dhyan Chand was a former international hockey player and a legendary figure in Indian and world hockey.
  • He is best remembered for his extraordinary goalscoring feats & three Olympic gold medals. He is often called “Hockey ka Jadugar” (Magician of the Hockey game). His birthday, 29th August, is celebrated as National Sports Day.
  • Major Dhyan Chand was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.

  • Jaya Sharma (born 17 September 1980 in Ghaziabad) is an Indian cricketer who has played one women’s test match and 77 women’s one-day internationals, including the 2005 Women’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa.   • Yogiraj Bharat Bhushan (born 30 April 1952) is an Indian yoga guru and honoured by Padma Shri for literature and education in 1991. Born at Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), Bharat Bhushan is the first recipient of the coveted “Padmashri Award” given by the President of India for his contribution to yoga.

Gautama Buddha

  • The founder of Buddhism, Gautama Buddha, was born in Lumbini, 563 BC, in the house of King Shroudhan of Ikshvaku Kshatriya  Shakyakul.
  • His mother’s name was Mahamaya which was from the Koli dynasty
  • His wife’s name was Yashodhara and the son’s name was Rahul.

  • Banabhatta was a writer and poet of Sanskrit prose of the seventh century.
  • He was the poet during King Harshvardhan’s reign (606 BC to 646 BC).
  • His two major works are Harshacharitam and Kadambari.

Ziauddin Barani

  • Ziauddin Barani was a historian and political thinker who lived in India during the time of Muhammad bin Tughlaq and Feroz Shah Tughlaq.
  • ‘Tarike Phorozshahi’ is his famous historical work.  Ziauddin Barani was born in the Syed family in 1285 AD.
  • Ziauddin was a resident of Baran (modern Bulandshahr), so he used to add Barni in his name.
  • He died in 1357 AD.

Amir Khusro 

  • His real name was – Abul Hassan Yemenuddin Muhammad.
  • Amir Khusro was born in the Patiali village (Kasganj) in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district in 1253. 
  • He was a Persian poet and used writing in Hindavi.
  • He used to call himself parrot-e-Hind.
  • He is credited with the invention of the Khadi Boli.  

Abul Fazal

  • He was born on 14 January 1551 in Agra.
  • Abul Fazl was the second son of Sheikh Mubarak Nagori.
  • His two compositions are Akbarnama and Nayne Akbari.
  • In 1602, Bundela king Veerasinghadeo killed Abul Fazl by provoking Prince Salim.

Birbal

  • Birbal was one of the Navaratnas in the court of Mughal emperor Akbar.
  • Birbal’s satirical stories and poetry compositions made him famous.
  • Birbal was born in 1528 AD in the city of Kanpur, in ‘Trikikampur’, ie, in Tikwapur.
  • Birbal had adopted the Din-i-Elahi religion. He died in 1586 AD.

Kabir Das

  • Saint Kabirdas was a famous poet of Hindi literature, though his poems, Dohe criticized many ill practices prevalent in society.
  • He was born in 1425 AD in Varanasi.
  • He was raised by Neelu-Neema.
  • His main composition is Sakhi, Sabad, Ramani.

Tulsidas

  • He is considered one of the best poets of the Hindi language He was born in 1552 in Rajapur, Uttar Pradesh.
  • His master’s name was Narharidas.
  • His main works include Ramcharitmanas, Vinayastika, Dahavali, Kavitavali, Hanuman Chalisa, Vairagya Sandeepani, Janaki Mangal, Parvati Mangal etc. He died in 1680.

Surdas

  • Surdas was a poet of Hindi literature, was born in 1478 AD. He is said to be blind by birth.
  • His main compositions are Saurasagar, Surasaravali, Sahitya Lahari His master’s name was Balbhacharya He died in 1583.

Ustad Bismillah Khan

  • Bismillah Khan was born on March 21, 1916 in Dumraon, Bihar.
  • Famous Shehnai maestro honored with ‘Bharat Ratna’ (2001)
  • Bismillah Khan was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1956.
  • He was also honored with the Tansen Award by the Government in Madhya Pradesh.
  • He died on August 21, 2006.
