Environmental Conservation

Environmental conservation is the protection, preservation, management, or restoration of natural environments and the ecological communities that inhabit them. It generally includes the management of human use of natural resources for current public benefit and sustainable social and economic utilisation.

At its foundation, conservation is the planned management of man’s surroundings to prevent its exploitation, destruction, or neglect. It does not mean hoarding. It means the wise management of resources to provide a continuous supply for a long time into the future — implying continuous renewal of a resource and recovering, recycling, or reusing the products.

Conservation of a natural area means its maintenance in a natural state for the purpose of enjoyment or study, in order to understand and appreciate the complexities of ecological laws. The concept derives its tenets from a knowledge of ecology — the science concerned with interrelationships between living things and their environment.

Conservation vs. Preservation

Preservation implies keeping natural resources in essentially undisturbed condition because of their scientific interest, aesthetic appeal, or recreational value (e.g., strict protected areas, no use at all). Conservation is broader — it includes rational use of resources for commodity or recreational value, sustainable harvesting, and restoration, alongside protection. Conservation is the pragmatic middle path between exploitation and preservation.

Natural resources are classified into renewable resources (forests, pastures, wildlife, aquatic life — replaced by natural processes, inexhaustible if properly managed) and non-renewable resources (minerals, metals, soil, coal, oil deposits — available in limited amounts and cannot be rebuilt). The urgency of conservation arises because:

  1. World population is increasing at an alarming rate.
  2. World resources are being used up at an increasing rate due to population growth.
  3. Pollution is increasing with the passage of time.
  4. Damage caused by human activities is sometimes irreversible — once species go extinct, or ecosystems collapse, they cannot be restored.

Concept of Conservation

Conservation is a broad concept involving not only scientific but also ethical, moral, economic, and political aspects. It has been variously defined according to different professional perspectives:

Conservation involves the collective responsibility of governments, private organisations, industries, and individuals — along with the setting aside of funds and finances for ecological research and execution of conservation projects. It perpetuates the natural environment of man, including air, water, soil, and all life forms.

Conservation is not a negative concept involving a simple curb on consumption. It is a positive programme of management — ensuring that what we harvest from the earth is replaced, what we damage is restored, and what we protect is studied and appreciated.”

The aims of conservation are two-fold:

  1. To ensure the preservation of a quality environment that considers aesthetics and recreational as well as product needs.
  2. To ensure a continuous yield of useful plants, animals, and materials by establishing a balanced cycle of harvest and renewal.

Principles of Conservation

Conservation is achieved through measures adopted in favour of a natural resource in order to increase its longevity and improve usage patterns. The following eight principles form the framework:

Wildlife Conservation:

Wildlife refers to non-domesticated animals living in a natural habitat. India was endowed with a particularly rich biological heritage — nearly 45,000 plant species (of which 7,000 are endemic) and approximately 75,000 animal species (of which 850 are mammals). However, human interference has caused the number of wildlife to decline sharply: many species have become extinct, some are endangered, and others are threatened.

The world is losing one species every day, and within the next 20 years, at least 25% of all forms of wildlife could be extinct if present trends continue. India alone has an estimated 150 threatened mammal species and 150 threatened bird species. An unknown number of insect and plant species are also in danger.

Reasons for Extinction of Wildlife

Preserving species is not a simple matter. The problems of wildlife management are very complex and involve work on three overlapping levelstechnical (habitat management, captive breeding), legal (acts, prohibitions, enforcement), and personal (individual awareness, behaviour change).

Wildlife populations respond very sensitively to their habitats — thus, habitat management is the most efficient technique. Wildlife management fundamentally includes habitat management. The Systems Approach

A group of techniques specifically designed for benefiting one target species in each area is called the systems approach. It involves: (a) intensive study and research by experts; (b) definition of goals; (c) public education through all media; (d) programmes to retain and improve habitat; (e) goal-oriented game harvest regulations or population control; (f) manipulation of sex and age ratios and animal density; (g) action to deter or apprehend poachers; (h) control of disease and parasites; and (i) well-researched transplanting of wildlife from areas of successful breeding to areas with high population-building potential (e.g., one-horned rhino translocation from Kaziranga to Tarahi).

Conservation in India: Status and Challenge

Indian wildlife is rich and diverse and hence deserves strong protection. The country’s biological wealth includes 45,000 plant species (7,000 endemic), 75,000 animal species (850 mammals). The prestigious list includes the mighty elephant, the gigantic Himalayan sheep, the Indian bison (gaur), spotted deer (chital), blackbuck, four-horned antelope, one-horned rhinoceros, Asiatic lion, and tiger.

Protected Areas: National Parks, Sanctuaries, and Reserves

National Park is an area dedicated to conserve the environment, natural and historical objects, and wildlife therein while providing for public enjoyment — in such a manner that leaves them unimpaired for future generations. All private rights are non-existent; all forestry operations and usages such as domestic animal grazing are prohibited.

Wildlife Sanctuary prohibits killing, hunting, shooting, or capturing of any bird or mammal species, except by or under the control of the sanctuary management authority. Private ownership rights may continue; forestry and other usages permitted if they do not adversely affect wildlife.

Protected Area is any area where special protection is offered to wildlife (including areas around reservoirs that attract water birds, or areas around large towns and sacred places).

Reserves are areas demarcated especially for the protection of wildlife.

Advantages of Protected Areas

  1. Scientific benefit: Studying undisturbed ecosystems reveals baseline ecosystem behaviour — allowing measurement of human-caused damage by comparison.
  2. Watershed protection: Watershed forests protect stream flow and avoid siltation of reservoirs; protected estuaries guarantee marine life production.
  3. Psychological well-being: Contact with plants and animals in a wild state appears important to human psychological health.
  4. Aesthetic and recreational value: National parks and wildlife sanctuaries are the world’s most popular tourist destinations.
  5. Legal clarity: Declared protected status makes it easier to monitor species populations, prevent poaching, and avoid overexploitation.
  6. Biodiversity baseline: Protected areas serve as reference ecosystems for scientific study of succession, energy flow, and ecological processes.

India’s protected area network grew from just 33 sites in 1952 to 221 by end of December 1980, covering 2–3% of total geographical area and 10% of total forest area. As of the most recent data:

Biosphere Reserves in India (Seven Major)

India’s seven major Biosphere Reserves are: (1) Nilgiri, (2) Gulf of Mannar, (3) Sunderbans, (4) Kaziranga, (5) Manas, (6) Nanda Devi, and (7) Great Nicobar. Biosphere Reserves differ from national parks in that they integrate conservation with sustainable development through zonation — core zone (strictly protected), buffer zone (research and limited use), and transition zone (human settlements and sustainable use).

Project Tiger — A Conservation Success Story

Project Tiger (1973 — Present)

There was a dramatic decline in the world tiger population — from approximately 40,000 at the turn of the 20th century down to just 1,827 in 1972. The main reasons for this collapse were hunting, habitat destruction by deforestation, and taming of rivers for human needs.

A long-term strategy based on principles of genetics and evolution was proposed — named “Project Tiger.” The project aimed not only at increasing tiger numbers but also at giving the tiger the requisite inherent genetic evolutionary resistance to successfully face future environmental pressures. This was the first conservation programme globally to integrate genetic thinking with protected area management.

This centrally-sponsored multimillion dollar project was initiated on April 1, 1973, and was funded by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Objectives of Project Tiger

  1. Ensuring the maintenance of a viable population of tigers in India for scientific, economic, aesthetic, cultural, and ecological values.
  2. Preserving for all times areas of biological importance as a national heritage for the benefit, education, and enjoyment of people.

Tiger Population Growth Under Project Tiger

The project concentrated on protecting good tiger habitats by creating sanctuaries and extending existing ones. Under this project, 58 tiger reserves have been set up across India.

By 1990, a total of 4,334 tigers were recorded in these reserves — a remarkable testament to the success of the programme. India’s tiger census (2022) estimated approximately 3,167 tigers — around 75% of the world’s wild tiger population.

India now has 58 Tiger Reserves (as of 2026) across the country. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) oversees Tiger Reserve management under the Wildlife Protection Act (Amendment) 2006. Project Tiger was institutionalised under NTCA in 2005. India accounts for the largest share of the global wild tiger population — a conservation success story unmatched globally.

Environmental conservation ultimately requires that awareness and understanding are deeply rooted in society at all levels. No policy or protected area can succeed without public support, compliance, and active participation. Environmental awareness must progress through the education system and into adult life.

Adult Environmental Education

The aim of adult education should be to create collective action in solving environmental problems. New complex environmental problems require understanding and, hence a new approach to adult education. Key requirements for effective adult education programmes:

  • Build capacities in technical, social, and institutional aspects of environmental management at the village level.
  • Reorient teachers and instructors with regard to natural resources management.
  • Find ways to sustain people’s interest in environmental issues.
  • Identify training objectives; determine training practices; match programmes to local demand; identify best modes and methods; ensure financing.

Key content areas for adult environmental literacy education include: maintaining household soak pits; preventing pollution of wells, ponds, and rivers; water conservation techniques; tree plantation; appropriate use of pesticides and fertilisers; biogas plants to minimise fuelwood use; solar energy promotion; locating polluting industries away from residential areas; and waste handling and recycling training.

The participation of rural women is particularly essential. Women spend a great part of their lives managing fuel, fodder, and water for families, and are actively involved in the sustainable use of common resources. Women’s involvement in decision-making for natural resources management constitutes an essential foundation for any effective environmental awareness programme.

Role of Mass Media

Mass media can play a vital role in creating awareness about the environment and conservation of natural resources through its multi-channel regional and network service — talks, interviews, plays, documentaries. The electronic media can identify and bring to public attention forces affecting the natural environment. Media research and planning in environmental protection can accelerate awareness through measuring advertising effectiveness, informing efficient media use, and transmitting conservation-oriented programming.

  • Eco-Clubs / National Green Corps: Over 70,000 eco-clubs set up across India covering ~150 schools per district; young students learn about the environment and participate in field activities.
