the&nbsp;<strong>Bhopal tragedy<\/strong>, the Government of India enacted the&nbsp;<strong>Environment Protection Act of 1986 under Article 253 of the Constitution.<\/strong>&nbsp;The act got passed in March 1986 and on 19 November 1986 came into force.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The purpose of the Act is to implement the decisions of the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations_Conference_on_the_Human_Environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations Conference on the Human Environment&nbsp;of 1972<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The decisions relate to the protection and improvement of the human environment and the prevention of hazards to human beings, other living creatures, plants and property.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Act is an \u201c<strong>umbrella<\/strong>\u201d for legislations designed to provide a framework for&nbsp;<strong>Central Government<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>coordination of the activities of various central and state authorities<\/strong>&nbsp;established under previous Acts, such as the&nbsp;<strong>Water Act<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>Air Act<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this Act, the&nbsp;<strong>main emphasis is given to<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201c<strong>environment\u201d, \u201cpollution\u201d, \u201cpollutants\u201d, and \u201chazardous substances\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through this Act&nbsp;<strong>Central Government&nbsp;gets full power<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>for the purpose of protecting and improving the quality of the environment.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rules under this Act<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rules 1989 for regulating GM Crops<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/environmental-impact-assessment-upsc\/\">EIA rules<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/strong>2006<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eco-Sensitive Area(Zone)<\/strong>&nbsp;rules, 1988<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a
