      • Gandhi Peace Prize Awards for\u00a0Social, Economic and Political transformation through Non-violence<\/strong>\u00a0was instituted in the year\u00a01995, on the occasion of the 125th<\/sup>\u00a0birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi<\/strong>, as a\u00a0tribute to his ideals and contributions to humanity.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n

        • There shall be\u00a0one Award each year<\/strong>, and the award carries an\u00a0amount of Rs 1 crore<\/strong>, a citation, a plaque and a traditional handicraft or handloom item.\n

          • The award is\u00a0conferred by the President of India\u00a0<\/strong>at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n

                    • Competence to make Proposals<\/strong>:\n
                        \n
                      • Competence to make proposals for the Award shall be enjoyed by;\n
                          \n
                        • (a)\u00a0Former members\u00a0<\/strong>of the Jury;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • (b)\u00a0Persons who have received\u00a0<\/strong>the Award;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • (c)\u00a0Members of Parliament<\/strong>\u00a0of India;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • (d)\u00a0Nobel Laureates\u00a0<\/strong>for the last five years;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • (e) The\u00a0Secretary-General of the United Nations and other leaders in international organisations or institutions<\/strong>\u00a0whose objectives are promotion of peace, non- violence and emancipation of less privileged sections of society, tolerance, social harmony and social justice;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • (f)\u00a0Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of the Universities<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • (g)\u00a0Heads of Indian Missions abroad<\/strong>\u00a0for bringing it to the notice of and for consulting major relevant institutions and experts of the country concerned;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • (h)\u00a0Heads of Institutions relating to studies and research<\/strong>\u00a0in non-violence and Gandhian principles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n

                        • Selection (Jury)<\/strong>:\n
                            \n
                          • The requisite scrutiny and final selection for the Award shall be\u00a0made by a Jury to be appointed by the Government of India<\/strong>\u00a0for this purpose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                          • The\u00a0Jury shall comprise five members<\/strong>, i.e.<\/mark>\n
                              \n
                            • the\u00a0Prime Minister of India<\/strong>, who would chair the Jury;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • the\u00a0Chief Justice of India<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • the\u00a0Leader of Opposition<\/strong>\u00a0recognized as such in the Lok Sabha or where there is no such Leader of Opposition then, the Leader of the single largest opposition party in that House;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • and\u00a0two other eminent persons<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • Members of the Jury shall be\u00a0appointed for a period of three years<\/strong>. After three years those chosen, other than the three permanent ex-officio members, shall retire. The retiring persons shall, however, be\u00a0eligible for reappointment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • If a member of the Jury retires or dies before the expiry of his term in office, another shall be appointed in his place for the unexpired part of that term.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • The\u00a0Prime Minister of India shall be the Chairman of the Jury<\/strong>. If for some reason it is not possible for him to be present in a meeting, the members present in the meeting may elect one member amongst them to preside over the meeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • The\u00a0Jury shall not be competent to take a final decision unless at least three of its members are present.<\/strong><\/mark><\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • The decision of the Jury shall be\u00a0by consensus.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • The discussions, deliberations, opinions and proceedings of the Jury in connection with the Award shall not be made public or otherwise revealed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • The Jury shall\u00a0announce its decision, as far as possible, on birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi which is 2nd October<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • Decisions of the Jury\u00a0shall not be subject to confirmation by any other authority and no appeal or protest can be made against them<\/strong>.<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                            • Payment of Award:<\/strong>\u00a0The\u00a0Ministry of Culture<\/strong>\u00a0will make payment of the amount of the Award at the time and place requested by the Awardee.\n

                              • Non-acceptance of Award:<\/strong>\u00a0Should an awardee decline an Award, then the amount will immediately\u00a0revert to the Government of India<\/strong>. But if an awardee accepts the Award yet fails to draw the amount within the period of 36 months, then the amount shall revert to the Government of India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
