Ranade<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong><em>Essays in Indian Economics,<\/em>\u00a01898<\/strong>) and\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>R.C Dutt<\/strong>, a retired ICS officer, who published\u00a0<strong><em>The\u00a0Economic History of India\u00a0<\/em>in two volumes (1901-1903).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early nationalists complained of India\u2019s growing\u00a0<strong>poverty and economic backwardness<\/strong>, the failure of modern industry and agriculture to grow and put blame on British economic exploitation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dadabhao Naoroji, RC Dutt, G.V. Joshi, G. Subramaniya Iyer, G.K. Gokhale, Prithwis Chandra Ray,<\/strong>\u00a0and hundreds of other political workers and journalists analyzed every aspect of the economy and subjected the entire range of economic issues and colonial economic policies to minute scrutiny.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Main thrust of this\u00a0<strong>economic nationalism<\/strong>\u00a0was on Indian\u00a0poverty\u00a0created by the\u00a0<strong>application of the classical economic theory of free trade<\/strong>\u00a0their main argument was that British colonialism had transformed itself in the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century by jettisoning the older and direct modes of extraction through plunder, tribute and\u00a0mercantilism in favour of more sophisticated and less visible methods of exploitation through free trade and foreign capital investment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dadabhai Naoroji\u00a0in his \u2018Indian Poverty and\u00a0Un-British Rule in India\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0laid his Drain of Wealth Theory.
