More elaborately,\u00a0<strong>any dispute between:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>the Centre and one or more states; or<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the Centre and any state or states on one side and one or more states on the other; or<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>between two or more states.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the above federal disputes, the Supreme Court has\u00a0<strong>exclusive original jurisdiction.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Further, this jurisdiction of the Supreme Court\u00a0<strong>does not extend<\/strong>\u00a0to the following:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A dispute arising out of any pre-Constitution treaty, agreement, covenant,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>engagement, sanad or other similar instrument.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dispute arising out of any treaty, agreement, etc.,which specifically provides that the said jurisdiction does not extent to such a dispute.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inter-state water disputes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matters referred to the Finance Commission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjustment of certain expenses and pensions between the Centre and the states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ordinary dispute of Commercial nature between the Centre and the states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recovery of damages by a state against the Centre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"writ-jurisdiction\">Writ Jurisdiction<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Supreme Court is empowered to issue writs, including\u00a0<strong>habeas corpus, mandamus, prohibition, quo-warranto and certiorari<\/strong>\u00a0for the enforcement of the fundamental rights of an aggrieved citizen.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In this regard, the Supreme Court has\u00a0<strong>original jurisdiction<\/strong>\u00a0in the sense that an aggrieved citizen can go\u00a0<strong>directly to the Supreme Court<\/strong>, not necessarily by way of appeal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, the writ jurisdiction of the Supreme Court is\u00a0<strong>not exclusive<\/strong>. The High Courts are also empowered to issue writs for the enforcement of the Fundamental Rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"appellate-jurisdiction\">Appellate Jurisdiction<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Supreme Court is primarily a\u00a0<strong>court of appeal and hears appeals against the judgements of the lower courts<\/strong>.
