ongoing Islamist insurgency in\u00a0<strong>Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique<\/strong>, mainly fought between militant Islamists and jihadists attempting to establish an Islamic state in the region, and Mozambican security forces.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Civilians have been the main targets of terrorist attacks by Islamist militants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The main insurgent faction is\u00a0<strong>Ansar al-Sunna<\/strong>, a native extremist faction with tenuous international connections.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ansar al-Sunna (\u201cSupporters of the id=\"golan-heights\">Golan Heights<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Golan Heights (Golan) is a\u00a0<strong>region in the Levant.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>rocky plateau<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>south-western Syria<\/strong>, about 60km (40 miles)\u00a0<strong>south-west of<\/strong>\u00a0the Capital,\u00a0<strong>Damascus<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>bounded by<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Jordan River<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Sea of Galilee\u00a0<\/strong>on the west,\u00a0<strong>Mount Hermon<\/strong>\u00a0on the north, the seasonal\u00a0<strong>Wadi Al-Ruqq\u0101d River<\/strong>\u00a0on the east, and the\u00a0<strong>Yarm\u016bk River\u00a0<\/strong>on the south.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Golan extends about 44 miles (71 km) from north to south and about 27 miles (43 km) from east to west at its widest point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>roughly boat-shaped<\/strong>\u00a0and has an area of\u00a0<strong>1,150 square kilometres.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>History<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Israel seized<\/strong>\u00a0the Golan Heights from Syria\u00a0<strong>in the closing stages of the 1967 Six-Day War.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most of the Syrian Arab inhabitants fled the area during the conflict.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An armistice line was established, and the region came under Israeli military control. Almost immediately, Israel began to settle the Golan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Syria tried to retake<\/strong>\u00a0the Golan Heights\u00a0<strong>during the 1973 Middle East<\/strong>\u00a0Despite inflicting heavy losses on Israeli forces, the surprise\u00a0<strong>assault was thwarted.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both\u00a0<strong>countries signed an armistice in 1974,<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0<strong>UN observer force has been in place\u00a0<\/strong>on the ceasefire line\u00a0<strong>since 1974.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Israel unilaterally annexed the Golan Heights in 1981<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are more than\u00a0<strong>30 Israeli settlements<\/strong>\u00a0in the Golan. The settlements are\u00a0<strong>considered illegal under international law<\/strong>, although Israel disputes this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About\u00a0<strong>20,000 Syrians and 20,000 Israelis live\u00a0<\/strong>in the Golan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Importance:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Syrian capital, Damascus,\u00a0<\/strong>can be\u00a0<strong>clearly seen<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0<strong>top of the Golan Hills<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>When it rains<\/strong>\u00a0here, its\u00a0<strong>water goes to the Jordan River<\/strong>, which supplies water in dry areas.
