Among the following, which one is the largest exporter of rice in the world in the last five years?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"mcq wp-block-list\">\n<li>China<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Myanmar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vietnam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Answer: (b) India<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"notes-hd-66066c5d66833\">Notes:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India\u2019s share<\/strong>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<strong>world exports of rice<\/strong>&nbsp;in recent years (2014-18) has stayed at&nbsp;<strong>25-26%<\/strong>&nbsp;and it emerged the&nbsp;<strong>world\u2019s largest rice exporter in 2011-12<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>displacing Thailand<\/strong>&nbsp;from its leadership position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were\u00a0<strong>two factors<\/strong>\u00a0which played a role in this.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Indian government\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;decision in&nbsp;<strong>February 2011<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>lift a four-year ban on exports of non-basmati varieties of rice&nbsp;<\/strong>paved&nbsp;the way for a rise in exports of those varieties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thailand government<\/strong>&nbsp;under Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, in the same year favoured farmers by strengthening a&nbsp;<strong>Rice Pledging Scheme<\/strong>&nbsp;under which it promised&nbsp;<strong>to procure unlimited stocks at an enhanced price<\/strong>&nbsp;that reflected a 50 per cent increase over 2010.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rice\">Rice<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rice is a&nbsp;<strong>staple food for most<\/strong>&nbsp;of the population in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a\u00a0<strong>kharif crop<\/strong>\u00a0which requires high temperature (above 25\u00b0C) and high humidity with annual rainfall above 100 cm.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the areas of less rainfall, it is grown with the help of irrigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In southern states and West Bengal, the climatic conditions allow the cultivation of two or three crops of rice in an agricultural year.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In West Bengal farmers grow three crops of&nbsp;<strong>rice called \u2018aus\u2019, \u2018aman\u2019 and \u2018boro\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About one-fourth of the total cropped area in India is under rice cultivation.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Leading Producer States:<\/strong>&nbsp;West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High Yielding States:<\/strong>&nbsp;Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Kerala.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is<strong>&nbsp;the second-largest producer of rice after China.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is the&nbsp;<strong>biggest exporter of rice in the world.<\/strong>&nbsp;As per the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), India accounted for about&nbsp;<strong>40% of the total rice exports<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>(56 million tonnes) in the world<\/strong>&nbsp;during 2022.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s rice exports are broadly categorised into<strong>&nbsp;Basmati&nbsp;and Non-basmati rice.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Basmati Rice:<\/strong>\u00a0In 2022-23, India exported 45.61 lakh metric tonnes of basmati rice.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Top destinations for Indian basmati rice included&nbsp;<strong>Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE, and Yemen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Non-Basmati Rice:<\/strong>\u00a0In the 2022-23 fiscal year, India exported 177.91 lakh metric tonnes of non-basmati rice.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The non-basmati rice includes varieties like Sona Masuri and Jeera rice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Top Destination of Non-basmati White Rice:<\/strong>\u00a0Benin, Madagascar, Kenya, Cote D\u2019 Ivoire, Mozambique, Vietnam.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The non-basmati rice category includes&nbsp;<strong>6 sub-categories\u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;rice in husk of seed quality;
