India\u2019s neighbors, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Myanmar, are among the hunger hotspots in the world.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights of the Report<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hotspots with catastrophic conditions<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are&nbsp;<strong>18 areas in 22 countries where acute&nbsp;Food Insecurity<\/strong>&nbsp;may increase in magnitude and severity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pakistan, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Syrian Arab Republic are&nbsp;<strong>hotspots with very high concern.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All these hotspots have a&nbsp;<strong>high number of people facing critical acute food insecurity<\/strong>, coupled with&nbsp;<strong>worsening drivers that are expected to further intensify life\u2011threatening conditions<\/strong>&nbsp;in the coming months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Countries at Highest Concern Level:<\/strong><\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen remain at the highest concern level.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Haiti, the Sahel (Burkina Faso and Mali) and the Sudan have been elevated to the highest concern levels; this is due to&nbsp;<strong>severe movement restrictions of people and goods<\/strong>&nbsp;in Haiti, as well as in Burkina Faso and Mali, and the recent eruption of<strong>&nbsp;Conflict in Sudan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expected to Face Starvation:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All the hotspots at the&nbsp;<strong>highest level have populations<\/strong>&nbsp;facing or projected to face starvation, or are at<strong>&nbsp;risk of deterioration towards catastrophic conditions<\/strong>, given they already have critical food insecurity and are facing severe aggravating factors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New Emerging Conflicts:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New emerging conflicts, in particular the eruption of conflict in the Sudan, will likely&nbsp;<strong>drive global conflict trends<\/strong>&nbsp;and impact several neighbouring countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The use of explosive ordnance and siege tactics in several hunger hotspots continues to push&nbsp;<strong>people into catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weather Extremes:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Weather extremes<\/strong>, such as heavy rains, tropical storms,<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/cyclones-and-anticyclones-upsc\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2509\">Cyclones<\/a><\/strong>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/floods-upsc\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8721\"><strong>Flooding<\/strong>,<\/a>&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/drought-upsc-notes\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8731\">Drought<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and increased climate variability, remain significant drivers in some countries and regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The May 2023 forecast suggests an 82 % likelihood of&nbsp;<strong>El Ni\u00f1o<\/strong>&nbsp;conditions starting in the May\u2013July 2023 period, with significant implications for several hunger hotspots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Shocks:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deepening economic&nbsp;<strong>shocks continue to drive low- and middle-income nations<\/strong>&nbsp;deeper into crisis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot_20230601_112112.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39297\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Recommendations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scale up nutritional support interventions, including treatment and prevention of malnutrition among children and <strong>pregnant and breastfeeding women in conflict\u2011affected areas.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urgent humanitarian action is needed to<strong>&nbsp;save lives and livelihoods and prevent starvation and death<\/strong>&nbsp;in hotspots where acute hunger is at a high risk of worsening from <strong>June to November 2023.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continuous monitoring of forecasts and their impact on production remains critical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Urgent and scaled-up&nbsp;<strong>assistance is required in all 18 hunger hotspots<\/strong>&nbsp;to protect livelihoods and increase access to food.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is essential to&nbsp;<strong>avert a further deterioration of acute food insecurity<\/strong>&nbsp;and malnutrition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the hotspots of highest concerns, humanitarian actions are critical in preventing further starvation and death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support <strong>infrastructure rehabilitation<\/strong> and <strong>conclude pre\u2011positioning of food commodities<\/strong> ahead of the rainy season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot_20230601_114727.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39304\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IPC-<\/strong> Integrated Food Security Phase Classification<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-86_6ce09c-28 .kt-block-spacer{height:50px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-86_6ce09c-28 .kt-divider{border-top-width:2px;border-top-color:var(--global-palette2, #2B6CB0);width:100%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-86_6ce09c-28\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context: According to a recent Report by FAO and WFP warn that acute food insecurity is likely to deteriorate further in 18 hunger hotspots \u2013 comprising a total 22 countries.
