{"id":82,"date":"2023-10-09T05:28:19","date_gmt":"2023-10-08T23:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/uncategorized\/helmand-river\/"},"modified":"2023-10-09T06:33:51","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T01:03:51","slug":"helmand-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/upsc\/helmand-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Helmand River"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote context is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Context:<\/strong> With Afghanistan and Iran locked in a water dispute, tension between the two neighbours has escalated after <strong>two Iranian security personnel and a Taliban fighter were killed in a border clash<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helmand River<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Helmand River is the <strong>longest river in Afghanistan<\/strong> and the primary watershed for the <strong>endorheic Sistan Basin<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It emerges in the <strong>Sanglakh Range of the Hindu Kush mountains<\/strong> in the northeastern part of Maidan Wardak Province, where it is separated from the watershed of the <strong>Kabul River by the Unai Pass.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Helmand feeds into <strong>the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamun_Lake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamun Lake<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;on the border between Afghanistan and&nbsp;Iran.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its waters are essential for farmers in Afghanistan, but it feeds into&nbsp;Lake Hamun&nbsp;and is also important to farmers in Iran&#8217;s southeastern&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sistan_and_Baluchistan_Province\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sistan and Baluchistan province<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A number of hydroelectric dams have created artificial reservoirs on some of the Afghanistan&#8217;s rivers including <strong>the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kajaki_Dam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kajaki Dam<\/a>&nbsp;on the Helmand River.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Helmand_Basin.webp\" alt=\"Helmand River\" class=\"wp-image-39056\" style=\"width:872px;height:658px\" width=\"872\" height=\"658\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Helmand-River.png\" alt=\"Helmand River\" class=\"wp-image-39057\" style=\"width:826px;height:888px\" width=\"826\" height=\"888\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sistan Region<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sistan region in the <strong>southeast of Iran<\/strong> has very varied climatic conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustained drought and reduced precipitation in the Sistan region, Iran, has dried the Hamoun Lake <\/strong>and local vegetation, significantly reducing ground cover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Sistan-Iran-1.webp\" alt=\"Sistan Region\" class=\"wp-image-39058\" style=\"width:699px;height:489px\" width=\"699\" height=\"489\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<style>.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-82_63b989-b3 .kt-block-spacer{height:50px;}.wp-block-kadence-spacer.kt-block-spacer-82_63b989-b3 .kt-divider{border-top-width:2px;border-top-color:var(--global-palette2, #2B6CB0);width:100%;border-top-style:solid;}<\/style>\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-82_63b989-b3\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Context: With Afghanistan and Iran locked in a water dispute, tension between the two neighbours has escalated after two Iranian security personnel and a Taliban fighter were killed in a border clash.&nbsp;
