{"id":74,"date":"2023-10-09T05:28:15","date_gmt":"2023-10-08T23:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/uncategorized\/shyamji-krishna-varma\/"},"modified":"2023-10-09T06:34:43","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T01:04:43","slug":"shyamji-krishna-varma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/upsc\/shyamji-krishna-varma\/","title":{"rendered":"Shyamji Krishna Varma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shyamji Krishna Varma was&nbsp;<strong>born<\/strong>&nbsp;on 4<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;October, 1857&nbsp;<strong>in Mandvi town of Kachchh district of Gujarat.<\/strong> Shyamji Krishna Varma (1857 \u2013 1930) was an Indian freedom fighter, lawyer and journalist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was\u00a0<strong>an<\/strong><strong>expert in Sanskrit and other languages<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>His deep knowledge of the Sanskrit language caught the attention of&nbsp;<strong>Monier Williams, a professor of the subject in Oxford University<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was inspired by&nbsp;<strong>Bal Gangadhar Tilak<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Swami Dayanand Saraswati&nbsp;<\/strong>and<strong>&nbsp;Herbert Spencer.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He\u00a0<strong>founded the Indian Home Rule Society<\/strong>,<strong>&nbsp;India House and The Indian Sociologist<\/strong>\u00a0in London.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Indian Home Rule Society (IHRS):<\/strong>&nbsp;It was an Indian organisation founded in London in 1905 that sought to <strong>promote the cause of self-rule in British India.<\/strong> The organisation was <strong>founded by Shyamji Krishna Varma<\/strong>, <strong>with support from Bhikaji Cama, Dadabhai Naoroji and S.R. Rana.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India House:<\/strong>&nbsp;He <strong>founded India House in London<\/strong>. It was a student residence that existed between 1905 and 1910 which was opened to <strong>promote nationalist views among Indian students in Britain.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Indian Sociologist:&nbsp;<\/strong>He founded Indian Sociologist in London. The <strong>monthly Indian Sociologist became an outlet for nationalist ideas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shyamji Krishna Varma became the\u00a0<strong>first President of Bombay Arya Samaj<\/strong>. He\u00a0<strong>inspired<\/strong><strong>Veer Savarkar<\/strong>\u00a0who was a member of India House in London. Verma also served as the\u00a0<strong>Divan of a number of states<\/strong>\u00a0in India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Swami Dayanand Saraswati was the founder of the Hindu reform organisation<strong> Arya Samaj.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was a\u00a0<strong>barrister in London<\/strong>, when in 1905, he was barred from practising law by the Inner Temple following\u00a0<strong>charges of<\/strong><strong>sedition<\/strong>\u00a0for writing against the colonial government.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The move was significant as the&nbsp;<strong>Honourable Society of the Inner Temple<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the&nbsp;<strong>four professional associations for barristers<\/strong>&nbsp;and judges in London.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was&nbsp;<strong>posthumously reinstated by the Inner Temple in 2015<\/strong>&nbsp;after the Inn\u2019s governing council noted that Varma \u201cdid not receive an entirely fair hearing\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the face of criticism by the British, Varma&nbsp;<strong>shifted his base from England to Paris<\/strong>&nbsp;and continued his movement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the outbreak of the&nbsp;<strong>First World War (1914-18)<\/strong>, however, he&nbsp;<strong>moved to Geneva in Switzerland<\/strong>&nbsp;and spent the rest of his life there.
