Symptoms and Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monkeypox is<strong>&nbsp;a&nbsp;viral zoonotic disease&nbsp;with symptoms<\/strong>&nbsp;similar to smallpox, although with less clinical severity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The infection was<strong>&nbsp;first discovered in 1958 following two outbreaks of a pox-like disease in colonies of monkeys<\/strong>\u00a0kept for research \u2014 which led to the name \u2018monkeypox\u2019.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>first human case was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cause<\/strong>&#8211; <strong>Monkeypox virus<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While the natural reservoir of monkeypox remains unknown, <strong>African rodents and monkeys are suspected of transmission and infection.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Occurrence-<\/strong>&nbsp;According to the WHO, cases occur close to<strong> tropical rainforests inhabited by animals that carry the virus.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the WHO, two distinct clades are identified\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the West African clade <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the Congo Basin clade (the Central African clade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Infected people break out in a rash that <strong>looks a lot like chicken pox.<\/strong> But the <strong>fever, malaise, and headache from Monkeypox are usually more severe <\/strong>than in chickenpox infection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the early stage of the disease,&nbsp;<strong>Monkeypox can be distinguished from smallpox because the lymph gland gets enlarged.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The incubation period (time from infection to symptoms) for monkeypox is usually 7-14 days but can range from 5-21 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Onset stage<\/strong>&#8211; Within a day to 3 days of the onset of fever, the patient develops a rash that begins on the face and spreads to other parts of the body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skin eruption stage<\/strong>&#8211; It can last between 2 and 4 weeks, during which the lesions harden, fill up with clear fluid and then pus, and then develop scabs or crusts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transmission:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Primary infection is through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or cutaneous or mucosal lesions of an infected animal.<\/strong> Eating inadequately cooked meat of infected animals is also a risk factor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Human-to-human transmission can result from close contact with infected respiratory tract secretions, skin lesions of an infected person<\/strong>, or objects recently contaminated by patient fluids or lesion materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transmission can also occur by<strong> inoculation or via the placenta<\/strong> (congenital monkeypox).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vulnerability:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It spreads rapidly and <strong>can cause<\/strong> <strong>one out of ten deaths<\/strong> if infected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The proportion of patients who die has varied between 0 and 11% in documented cases and has been higher among young children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Treatment and Vaccine:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>There is no specific treatment or vaccine available for Monkeypox infection<\/strong>, But the&nbsp;<strong>European Union<\/strong>&nbsp;has recommended a&nbsp;<strong>Small Pox<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Vaccine, Imvanex to treat<\/strong>&nbsp;monkeypox after the WHO declared monkeypox a global health emergency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Monkeypox-Symptoms.jpg\" alt=\"monkeypox\" class=\"wp-image-22508\" style=\"width:633px;height:633px\" width=\"633\" height=\"633\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does Monkeypox different from smallpox?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The monkeypox virus is an orthopoxvirus, which is a genus of viruses that also includes the variola virus, which causes smallpox, and the vaccinia virus, which was used in the smallpox vaccine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monkeypox causes symptoms similar to smallpox, although they are less severe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Also, the symptoms of both diseases vary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While vaccination eradicated smallpox worldwide in 1980, monkeypox continues to occur in countries in Central and West Africa and has on occasion shown up elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can be done?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are a number of measures that can be taken to prevent infection with the monkeypox virus.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid contact with animals that could harbor the virus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid contact with any materials, such as bedding, that have been in contact with a sick animal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Isolate infected patients from others who could be at risk for infection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice good hand hygiene after contact with infected animals or humans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use personal protective equipment (PPE) when caring for patients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does Monkeypox different from smallpox?
