{"id":23,"date":"2023-10-09T05:27:37","date_gmt":"2023-10-08T23:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/uncategorized\/sawa-lake-iraqs-pearl-of-the-south\/"},"modified":"2023-10-09T06:40:01","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T01:10:01","slug":"sawa-lake-iraqs-pearl-of-the-south","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lotusarise.com\/news\/upsc\/sawa-lake-iraqs-pearl-of-the-south\/","title":{"rendered":"Sawa Lake (Iraq&#8217;s &#8216;pearl of the south&#8217;)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Context<\/strong>: Iraq\u2019s famous and prominent Lake Sawa has <strong>dried up for the first time in its centuries-long history<\/strong> and locals believe that it is due to mismanagement by local investors, government neglect and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sawa Lake is an&nbsp;<strong>endorheic basin located in the Iraqi governorate of Muthanna<\/strong>&nbsp;near to the&nbsp;<strong>Euphrates River<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This lake has&nbsp;<strong>no inlet or outlet<\/strong>, but it&nbsp;<strong>draws water from the Euphrates through a system of joint cracks and fissures<\/strong>&nbsp;which transport water to aquifers beneath it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>water\u2019s level fluctuates<\/strong>&nbsp;during dry and wet seasons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sawa Lake is characterized by arid climate<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because of its&nbsp;<strong>saline water, no plants grow in the lake or on its shores<\/strong>.
